Bamboo workshop - a basic introduction about bamboo material, bamboo craft technics and bamboo applications for everyday life.Bamboo material has been used for over 40 centuries in humans. It is a traditional material yet it is also a modern material for nowadays, widely used in arts, craftmanship and industry, offering an open playground for innovative design and development opportunities. Especially, global warming has put a spotlight of governments, academia and industry on sustainable and environmental materials such as bamboo.Who is the target audience?People who are interested in bamboo (no need for any pre-existing knowledge or skills) as a sustainable material and who like to learn basic bamboo weaving technic and get some knowledge about the characteristics of bamboo.What are they going to learn?Dr. Lee Hungwei, the instructor, will present the characteristics of bamboo materials such as Moso bamboo and Makino bamboo. Furthermore, the instructor will introduce different production technics such as bamboo carving, bamboo weaving, bamboo pipe joining, and bamboo laminating for creating bamboo architecture, craft, arts, and manufacturing goods. Also, the instructor will show that the bamboo plant is eco-friendly for the environment in terms of air and soil conservation.In the practical session, the instructor will demonstrate how to slit split bamboo material for weaving so that the participants can get an idea of how flexible bamboo is. The participants can then experience the flexible texture of bamboo by making a bamboo frog.What is the benefit for the participants?The participants will gather knowledge about wide applications of the bamboo material as well as craft technics where bamboo can also be combined with other materials such as with wood, ceramic, fibers or steel. They will experience with their own hands the characteristics of bamboo material by making the bamboo frog. It will also be shown what recycled bamboo can be used for in manufacturing, for example, that recycled bamboo chopsticks can be turned into furniture.However, the workshop welcomes participants to ask the instructor any questions and discuss to their specific interests about bamboo material and bamboo applications.InstructorDr. Hungwei Lee (Michael), Assistant Professor at Department of Product and Interior Design Art and Design College in Nanhua University, Taiwan. Hung-Wei as the fourth generation of the family’s bamboo business, Lee combines design, craft and art in his profession. He uses bamboo fibre in mixed media works, also involves in innovative research and development in the bamboo industry to enhance the integration of theory and practice. In the realms of creation, education and research, Lee is highly experienced in international cooperation and exchange among the industry, policymakers, and educators.
